Why do so many people choose to have their vision corrected by
Dr. Joseph Feder?

Personal care and attention, experience, expertise, technology and results are just a few of the reasons.

As a fellowship trained ophthalmologist specializing in corneal surgery, Dr. Feder has subspecialty certification in LASIK, Visx Excimer Laser and Radial Keratotomy.  He is the LASIK Consultationonly physician in Manitowoc Count performing LASIK eye surgery.

Dr. Feder is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, where he also earned his bachelor’s degree with honors in Biophysics.  As an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Southern Illinois School of Medicine, he established and directed the ophthalmology residency program and conducted research in the area of corneal transplantation and graft rejection.  In private practice he continues to offer his patients the most advanced technology available in laser vision correction and state-of-the-art cataract surgery.

What is LASIK?

LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) is a revolutionary laser procedure that alters the shape of the human cornea to improve the ability of the eye to focus incoming light on the retina, thus improving your vision.  The result is the elimination of the need for glasses or contacts, or less dependency on them.

The LASIK procedure is performed in the following steps:

  • After the eye is numbed with eye drops, it is gently held open to prevent blinking.  A customized flap is created on the cornea with an instrument called a microkeratome.
  • While looking at a target light, the laser reshapes the cornea.
  • The flap is then folded back into place.  The flap self adheres, requiring no stitches.

LASIK CandidateAm I a good candidate for LASIK?

While LASIK is highly successful for most people, it is not for everyone.  The best way to determine if LASIK is right for you is to visit the Aurora Vision Center for a Free Consultation with Dr. Feder.   The majority of nearsighted, farsighted and astigmatic people over the age of 18 are good candidates for LASIK.  The best candidates tend to be people who are free of eye disease and have a stable, or non-changing, prescription for glasses or contacts lenses for 12 months or more.

LASIK is not recommended for:

  • Pregnant women
  • People with poorly controlled diabetes
  • People with autoimmune disorders (such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus)
  • People with a history of ocular herpes, cataracts or glaucoma

What are the risks of having LASIK?

For most patients LASIK surgery complications are minimal and the results are very good.  However, like all medical procedures, there are risks involved. Evaluation by Dr. Joseph Feder, a fully Board Certified Check out after LASIK ExamOphthalmologist, is essential for you to fully understand the benefits, limitations, and possible complications of refractive surgery.

A few of the more common side effects include:

  • Glare
  • Halos
  • Dry Eyes
  • Reduced Night or Fog Vision

A very small percentage of people may require additional treatment if they are still under corrected after LASIK surgery. Additionally, patients who use reading glasses may still need them after surgery, though their distance vision will be corrected.

This information is a brief over view of possible effects of LASIK. For a complete list of possible complications and to fully understand these risks and benefits you should contact Dr. Feder for a free LASIK consultation.

How do I find out if LASIK is right for me?

An initial consultation with Dr. Feder should be set up to determine possible candidacy.  This includes measuring the curvature of your cornea by topography to make sure you don’t have an irregular astigmatism or a cone-shaped cornea – a condition called keratoconus.

The second step is a thorough eye exam at the Aurora Vision Center.  Dr. Feder will:

Dilate your pupils to fine-tune your prescription.
Examine your eyes to make sure they’re healthy.  This includes a glaucoma test and a retina exam.

Take precise measurements of:LASIK Exam

  • The curvature of your cornea and your pupils.  You may be rejected if your pupils are too large.
  • The topography of your eyes to make sure you don’t have an irregular astigmatism or cone-shaped cornea.
  • The pachymetry, or thickness, of  your cornea to determine if there will be enough tissue left after your corneas have been cut and reshaped.
  • Your current eyeglass prescription to ensure it has not changed in the last year.

If you meet these criteria, then LASIK may be a viable option for you.

You will be advised to stop wearing your contact lenses for a while before the initial consultation and surgery.  Contacts can temporarily change the shape of the cornea.  Your cornea should be in its natural shape the day of surgery.
